Hill Family

Olive Batcher, of course, literally wrote the book on the Hill-Wallace family history1. I rely here very much on that book, as well as on recollections written by the children.

Valdo Stanton Hill was born in February, 18582, in Washington County, Ohio, to George W. and Charlotte Hill1,3. By the 1870 Census, his family had migrated to Mahaska County, Iowa.4

Valdo married Adalaide Margretta Wallace in 1881. Addie was born in August, 18612, in Delaware County, Ohio, to Elam and Ellen Mary McKinnie Wallace1,5. Her family had also migrated to Mahaska County, Iowa, by the 1870 Census.6.

The children of Valdo and Addie were:

  1. George M. Hill, b. 5/1882,2
  2. Alwilda Hill, b. 1/24/1884,7
  3. Herbert H. Hill, b. 3/1886,2, m.
  4. Nina Adelaide Hill, b. 10/25/1887,8
  5. Carlos V. Hill, b. 9/1889,2
  6. Dorothy E. Hill, b. 5/1891,2, mar. Walter Lee, abt. 19109
  7. David B. Hill, b. 2/18932, mar. Maud Duff, abt. 191710
  8. Darsie D. Hill, b. 1/18952, mar. Ella M., abt. 192111
  9. Charlotte Hill, b. 1/18972, mar. Charles E. Newman, abt. 191912
  10. Lois Hill, b. 10/18992
  11. Marley Hill, abt. 190413

Regarding Adalaide Wallace Hill, I take the spelling of her name from the 1910 census for which she was the enumerator. I've read letters she wrote, and am satisfied that she knew how to spell her name.

Nina, Carlos, Dorothy, David, and Darsie were born in Nebraska. By 1897 the family had returned to Mahaska County, Iowa.
